Charles Hansen, also known as Charlie Hale, is a multifaceted British comedian, impressionist, and former professional footballer whose career has spanned sports, television, radio, and live entertainment. He performed at the EMMA show and had attended numerous times, assisting us in personally giving Muhammad Ali his well-deserved EMMA Lifetime Achievement award as they both understood EMMA’s objective to promote social cohesion within society.
Charles’ early life was steeped in football. As a teenager, he joined Manchester City’s youth setup, nurturing dreams of a professional sports career. However, a knee injury and long-term asthma curtailed his aspirations, leading him to retire from football at the age of 20. This pivotal moment redirected his path toward the world of comedy.
Embracing his natural flair for entertainment, Charles transitioned into comedy, quickly gaining recognition for his sharp wit and uncanny impressions. In 1990, he won the prestigious Greenall Whitley Comedian of the Year award, which propelled him into the national spotlight.
Charles’ talents were showcased on television programs such as Granada TV’s revival of “The Comedians” in 1992, where his impersonations of figures like Chris Eubank, Mike Tyson, and David Beckham captivated audiences.
Charlie’s versatility extended to various TV appearances, including BBC1’s “Hangar 17,” ITV’s “What’s New,” and Sky One’s “Stand and Deliver,” where he blended humour with musical elements.
Beyond television, Charles became a sought-after performer on the after-dinner circuit, particularly at sporting events. His clean humour and engaging presence made him a favourite at functions featuring sports legends such as Pele, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Charles also hosted tours and events with boxing greats like Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, and Floyd Mayweather, further cementing his status in the sports entertainment realm.
Charles’ radio career is equally notable. He appeared on numerous programs, including BBC Radio 4’s documentary on the sporting dinner circuit and BBC Radio 5 Live’s “The Curry Club” with Edwina Currie. His comedic segments and interviews made his voice familiar to listeners, showcasing his adaptability across media platforms.
In addition to his entertainment pursuits, Charles experienced a profound personal transformation. In 1991, he embraced Christianity, which influenced both his personal life and professional ethos. He shifted towards clean comedy, aligning his performances with his faith.
Charles became active in evangelical work, sharing his testimony at church events and outreach programs and hosting his shows on Christian television channels like the GOD Channel and Revelation TV.
Charles’ creative endeavours also include music. He released a tribute song titled “Muhammad Ali’s Dream (Fighting for Equality),” featuring appearances by 18 boxing champions and highlighting Ali’s humanitarian efforts. The project underscored Charlie’s commitment to honouring figures who inspire positive change.
