Samuel L. Jackson

EMMA Supporter

Samuel L. Jackson was born on 21 December 1948 in Washington, D.C, USA. He is one of contemporary cinema’s most iconic and influential actors, known for his powerful performances, distinctive voice, and charismatic screen presence. He publicly supported EMMA through his EMMA Show appearance that encouraged the creative industries to support our social cohesion campaign for a better society to avoid growing division and promote love, peace and harmony.

Samuel grew up in a segregated environment in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which fueled his early awareness of social and racial issues. This theme would later be present in many of his roles. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied drama, and it was there that he met prominent civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s father.

After graduating, Samuel moved to New York City, where he struggled to break into the theatre scene before landing his first notable film role in 1981’s Ragtime. His big break came with director Spike Lee, with whom Jackson formed a strong creative partnership, beginning with the 1989 film Do the Right Thing and continuing with 1991’s Jungle Fever, where he played powerful, memorable roles that showcased his ability to tackle complex, emotional characters.

Samuel’s career reached new heights in 1994 with his well-known portrayal of the charismatic and philosophical hitman Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, earning him an Academy Award nomination and catapulting him to international stardom. His unforgettable delivery of Tarantino’s dialogue and remarkable on-screen presence became defining features of his career.

Following his success in Pulp Fiction, Samuel’s filmography grew to include a diverse range of roles, from action films such as 1995’s Die Hard with a Vengeance to comedies such as 2001’s The 51st State and even critically acclaimed films such as 1996’s A Time to Kill, where he played Carl Lee Hailey, a role that demonstrated his versatility and emotional depth.

Samuel became a central figure in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, where he portrayed the Jedi Master Mace Windu, solidifying his presence in blockbuster franchises.

Samuel’s role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) began with 2008’s Iron Man. The film kicked off the MCU’s interconnected storyline, making him one of the most recognisable characters in the franchise.

Samuel’s work in the MCU, alongside his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino in films including 1997’s Jackie Brown, 2009’s Inglourious Basterds as the Narrator, and 2012’s Django Unchained, further established him as one of Hollywood’s most reliable and high-earning stars.

Samuel’s distinctive voice also made him an ideal candidate for voiceover work, with roles in animated films such as 2004’s The Incredibles and various video games, showcasing his versatility beyond traditional acting.

In addition to his acting career, Samuel has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, racial equality, and political activism, particularly in Hollywood’s representation of African American and other Minority actors and filmmakers. He has worked extensively with charities and organisations, including his involvement in the African American Film Critics Association and support for various philanthropic efforts.

Samuel’s impact on pop culture hasn’t gone unnoticed. His roles in films have often transcended the screen to become part of the broader cultural lexicon, with quotes like “Say ‘what’ again!” from Pulp Fiction becoming iconic in their own right.

Holding the title of the highest-grossing actor in film history, Samuel L. Jackson’s influence and cultural presence are unmatched, with a career spanning genres from drama and action to comedy and animation.

As of 2025, Samuel continues to work in film and television, remaining an enduring and beloved figure in entertainment. He is admired for his remarkable longevity, dedication to his craft, and unwavering commitment to important social issues.
